The 61st Bute Highland Games will be held this year on Saturday, 23rd August at the Public Stadium, Rothesay.

The formal opening of the Games by the Honorary Chieftain for 2008, the Marquess of Bute, takes place at 12 noon.

The events of the day will start at around 10am and last until 6pm and include:

  • Athletics
  • 10k Road Race
  • Highland Dancing
  • Scottish Heavy Events
  • Pipe Band Competition All Grades
  • Junior Shinty Tournament
  • Trade Stalls
  • Refreshments
  • Kiddies Attractions


Earlier events usually comprise a Junior Shinty Tournament followed by Youth Athletics. Also, Highland Dancing Competitions (for Argyll & Bute competitors) and Local Athletics take place during the morning.

The Bute Heavyweight Championship (for the Duke of Rothesay Trophy, generously gifted by HRH. Prince Charles); Wrestling (4 British and 1 Scottish Championships); Pipe Band Competitions (all Grades); Drum Major Competitions; Premier Highland Dancing Championships (5 Open Championship Age Groups) and the Bute 10 Kilometre Road Race all take place during the afternoon.

The 10km road race starts at 2.30pm within the stadium and also finishes on the stadium running track.

The prize giving takes place around 5.30pm, and is followed by the parade of the massed bands down through the town to the ferry terminal.
