Islanders on Bute have voted in favour of Scotland's biggest ever community buyout proposal, STV reports.

There were 2,739 votes cast, a 52.5% turnout. Under the rules of community buyout ballots, a turnout of over 50% was required. Of those who voted, 2,557 voted 'yes', 93.3%. 177 voted 'no' and there were five spoiled papers.

A formal submission will be made to the Scottish Government next week including the ballot result and a feasibility study.

Bute Community Land Company believes the purchase of Rhubodach Forest, valued at around £1.4million, could turn the island into a top eco-tourism destination.

Read Craig Borland's article "Historic moment" as Bute supports forest buy-out" in The Buteman.

The Bute Community Land Company says on its website: "That's an overwhelming YES from the people of Bute. Thank you and now let's get on and get this project off the ground for real."

What do you think?

Fantastic news for the island and many thanks to everyone involved in making this project work. This will revitalise the island and be our legacy to future generations!!
