Bridget Paterson says:

The Discover Bute Landscape Partnership Scheme, a project funded by the Heritage Lottery and a further 9 funders, has, in its first year just spent £750,000 on the landscape of rural Bute. Bute is beautiful but there are now even more reasons to visit. The old Tramway route, disused since the late 1930s has been made into a path so that people can walk safely from Port Bannatyne East coast to Ettrick Bay on the west.

A new bird hide has also been constructed along at the southern end of Ettrick Bay. It is a beautiful construction of stone and timber with a turf roof. After cake or lunch at the Ettrick Bay tea room, well worth a visit, why not walk along to the hide and see what waders and sea birds are on the shore. The project has also been restoring dry stone walls across the island, whilst training the next generation of wallers, and re-planting the 'gappy' hedges.

Many people come to Bute to walk the West Island Way, a long distance path of 30 miles. Large sections of this have been repaired and it is once again something to add to your 'must do' list. Come to Bute for a long weekend and walk the West Island Way.

Billy Shields adds:

We also got youngsters doing their SVQ in land management + teaching volunteers path maintenance, bridge building. There has been major upgrading of paths & car parks for visitors to Bute throughout the Island.

John Macintyre says

Just one small comment on this interesting feature. My Grandfather who was born in Mill St late in the 19th century often spoke of his Grandfather an Archie Macintyre who was a "Dry Stane Diker" on the Island during the first part of the 19th century, so I would like to think that your team is repairing some of my Gt.Gt. Grandfather's handy work.

Regards, John Macintyre.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
